* Dark lipstick on very dark skin looks overpowering. Use non glossy matte colors, very close to your natural skin tone for a softer effect.
* Fair pink complexioned women should avoid wearing pinks & reds. They look good in earthy browns & coppers or neutrals without pink & reds.

A WORD ABOUT RED:

* Red lipstick is specifically for the nights. Not everybody can carry it off. Red can make you look harsher or even older, if not applied the right way.
* Often lips don't match each other in size. Most people have either a thinner or thicker upper lip than the lower one. Using a single lip color just exaggerates this flaw. It is a good idea to use two different shades , both in the same color spectrum but one slightly deeper than the other. On the leaner lip, use the lighter shade to make it look fuller. This creates the illusion of proportion. To perfect the look , illusion of proportion. To perfect the look, place a tinge of the lighter shade in the middle of your thicker lip. Coat lipstick with Vaseline for super sheen. Carry lip gloss with you. It is a mistake to keep piling on more & more lipstick.
* As a general rule, blot frosted lipstick not matte ones.

SMALL FACE:

* If you have small face than apply dark color lip iner at the outer line of lips & light color lipstick inside.

BROAD FACE:
* If you have broad face than apply light color foundation on lips & than apply lipstick.

BROAD LIPS:

* If you have broad lips than apply dark color inside the lips & light color lipstick on the outer line of lips.

COLOR THEM RIGHT:
If you have discolored lips, you can set them right by applying a lip base before you smooth on lipstick or gloss. Or just dab on little foundation or loose powder all over your lips. Not only this let the color show better, it will also make it stay longer.

BLOT IT:

If you are wearing lipstick, place a tissue firmly over your lips. Then brush on a little loose translucent powder over the tissue. Take off the tissue & reapply the color. This makes the lipstick stay on smooth for longer.

SEAL IT IN:

Lipstick sealants should be applied after you have applied lip color/ gloss/ lacquer. This locks the color in, but the alcohol factor ( which seals the color) can cause your lips to sting when applied. Lip sealants can dry your lips too., so if you have dry or sensitive lips, avoid these products.

PICK YOUR STICK:

There are varieties of textures & shades available to you today, so choose well.

*MOISTURIZING LIPSTICKS:

These come either enriched with Vitamin E or have a thin little moisturizing stick at their core.

*LONG STAY/KISS PROOF/HIGH IMPACT:

These promise to stay on while you perform all your daily activities like eating, drinking, talking,      kissing.... this formulation also dries lips, so...........

*FROSTED:
Perfect for the night out.

*MATTE:
Buy one for office wear.

*SHEER SHADES:
These just leave a sheer film on your lips, with the slightest hint of color.

*SHIMMER:
Little shimmer particles add glam slim.

*GLOSSES:
Just like normal lipsticks, these come in several shades with exotic names.

*LIP LACQUERS:
For high intensity pigmentation.

FAKE IT:

If you are not satisfied with your natural lip shape (either too plump or too thick), draw a line with your lip liner lightly above or below your natural line to adjust the look. However, you would need a lot of practice before you perfect this art. For a cover -girt pout, dab a hint of petroleum jelly or dot some shimmer powder splat in the middle of your lower lip. Or you could just apply more of your lipstick in this area.
Don't be afraid to mix & match to create your own lipstick shade. Combine two to three shades on the back of your hand & apply with a brush.

Lipstick—How to choose colors

One of the biggest makeup challenges is choosing the right lip color. Some women vary their lipstick in accordance with their wardrobe—a big no-no, since your lipstick is supposed to complement your skin tones!

It's not hard to choose lipstick colors once you know one simple fact. All you need to know is whether your skin tones are "warm" or "cool". It's not about how dark or light you are, or even about your hair or eye color, but what the undertone of your skin is—is it bluish (cool) or yellowish (warm)? Everyone is either warm or cool and it's all about your facial coloring: blondes, brunettes and redheads can be either one.

So how can you tell if you aren't sure? Dig through your makeup bag and find just two shades of any kind of makeup—lip color, eye shadow or blush. Find one color that is orange or rust and another that is pink or lavender. Rub one color on the apple of your cheek and the other color on the apple of the other cheek and then compare. Does one look more "right" than the other? Does one look garish or just wrong? The color that works will show you your skin tone. If the orange color looks right, you have warm tones; if the pink color looks right, you are cool.

Now that you know your skin tone, you are free to choose any lip color in that color family. But that doesn't mean you'll only wear one lipstick shade: you still have plenty to choose from! Take a look at this list of potential lip shades for either coloring:

Warm Colors

Coral, Peachy, Russet, Rust, Amber, Brown, Brick Red, Melon, Salmon, Orange, Sandalwood, Red with yellow undertone, Taupe

Cool Colors

Pink, Raspberry, Cherry, Mulberry, Lavender, Plum, Rose, Strawberry, Crimson, Amethyst, Lilac, Red with blue undertone, Mauve

As you can see, the color names associated with warm and cool tones tend to fall into two groups. The warm tones tend to be earthy, woodsy, with only a couple of fruit names (peach and melon). Cool tones tend to contain the names of berries, which are often shades of pink or purple or reds with blue undertones. Warm and cool women can both wear red lipstick, but the "true red" tend to be bluish, so warm women should look for reds with a slight leaning towards brown or orange. Once you understand your skin tone, the trick is not to fall for a pretty name when the shade doesn't flatter your skin.
Don't let the name fool you into buying something that looks wrong on you. Read the name after you've looked at the color!

The best way to get every shade you want is to buy a whole palette of lip colors. But lipstick palettes usually have two or three colors that work and another fifteen that look just awful. If you've ever bought a lip palette, you know what it's like: there are a couple of colors you want, and you have to buy the rest of the palette to get them. They're the two spots where the color's worn to the bottom of the case in a few months while the rest of the compact is untouched. When you're out of the colors you love, the rest goes into a drawer. "I'll think about it later," we say to ourselves while the little pots of unused, unwearable color pile up inside our vanity drawers.
Wouldn't it be great to get a lip palette of every shade you love? To choose each individual color based on what looks great on you? To know you can mix colors with the confidence of knowing that they will blend beautifully because they are in the same color family? And when a beloved color runs low, wouldn't it be great to just replace it and keep the compact! Guess what? You can!

Use a lip pencil or liner to before putting on lip color.

While you don't want to stray too far from the natural shape of your mouth, lip pencils can add clean definition while subtly but powerfully redefining your mouth. Drawn just outside your natural lip line, lip pencil adds fullness; drawn just on the inside, your lips appear slightly thinner.

Want to achieve a luscious pout? Add fullness to the bottom lip with a lip pencil two shades lighter than the one you use on your upper lip.

Love the Julia Roberts look? Soften and enhance your upper lip line by drawing with your lip pencil in a heavy stroke, then smudge ever-so-slightly upwards with the end of your pinkie. Blot, then apply your lipstick to the edge of the original line.

For total freedom in lip color, make sure you have lip liner pencils in several colors. One lip pencil just can't cut it: you'll want to use slightly lighter or darker lip pencils to create the illusion of fullness or to slightly thin out heavier lips.

A neutral, pale brown eyebrow pencil can make your brows look fuller & more even, line your eyes without looking obvious, and make your lower lip look bigger, if applied correctly. Very lightly, dot just a bit of pale brown liner under the center of your bottom lip, right under the lip line, where the shadow of your lip is. Blend it with a finger, outward and downward; it creates the illusion of a bigger lip shadow, which makes your lower lip look fuller and softer.

It is better to buy a lipstick with a point. It helps keep the part around your lip line straight

Lip liner is not essential but if used, it should be applied first. It should either be neutral in color or match the shade of your lipstick and not darker than your lipstick, so that if the lipstick fades, you don't walk around with only the outline showing. Lip liner is used to define the look of your lips and normally, you start lining them on your natural lip line starting from the center of your upper lip to the outer edge. For sharpening the lip pencil, chill it in the refrigerator for a few minutes first. To make the lipstick stay longer, use foundation on the lips first, then apply lipstick, blot the extra color with a tissue, reapply the lipstick and then dust the lips with powder. Since foundation and powder make lips drier, use lipstick with a creamy formula to counter the effect.

Great Lip Gloss

You can't buy lip gloss from a drugstore—unless you want a gloppy, sticky, slimy mess, perhaps adorned with little bits of sharp glitter and a heavy bubble-gum scent. Perfect for 'tweens, lip gloss for grown-ups should add subtle shine and color. But the best lip glosses do more than shine you up: they add essential organic oils like tangerine, clove, peppermint, lavender, vanilla, grapefruit and rose. Essential oils not only add health to your lips: their natural scents create instant aromatherapy when applied to the lips. Vanilla and peppermint have been shown to increase happy feelings; grapefruit and tangerine give you a boost of energy; rose and lavender are perfect for calming and soothing stressed nerves. Lip gloss with essential oils that does more than make you look wonderful: it makes you feel wonderful too!

Warm and cool shades apply to your lip gloss choices as they do your lipsticks. Choose colors one shade lighter or darker than your favorite lipsticks for an extra layer of light-loving color, or wear them alone for a natural, pretty look.

Want to maximize your lip color wardrobe? Choose your lipsticks first, then add lip pencils one shade darker than each lipstick, and finish by picking lip glosses one shade lighter than each lipstick. Make sure your lip pencils, lipsticks and glosses are all from the same color family that matches your skin tone. Don't forget a calming lip treatment to protect and smooth no matter which colors you wear!

For Work to Dinner to Dancing: A Lip for All Reasons

Your daily lip color should be more muted than your night-time look, but we often dash from work to an evening out without returning home. With a small, portable lip palette, you can bring a daytime and a nighttime shade along with complementary lip pencils with no extra hassle—they fit into your purse! Take along a miniature compact with your daily shade, and add a second, more dramatic color alongside it. Or wear a gloss for day and add a lipstick for night. When you're getting ready for the evening, your glammed-up lip color will be right—and right where you need it.

CHOOSING LIPSTICK

Be careful while choosing the lip color and try it out in a cosmetic salon first and let them assist you in your color choices. For women with large lips, muted colors such as purples, browns and bronzes are the best choices while women with thinner lips should use light colors. Wine, berry, cappuccino and mauve colors suit light blondes best while coral, apricot and shades of peach are suitable for blondes that have a golden hue. Warm peach, brown and terracotta shades are for blondes that sport olive skin tones. Redheads may use warm colors such as shades of terracotta, cinnamon and peachy brown while shades such as terracotta, cinnamon and reds with hints of brown are the most suited colors for brunettes.

Mature women should not use matte lipsticks though, for a little gloss can make their lips appear softer and lip liner will keep the lipstick from melting. In case, the lip color or brush slips from your hands accidentally and stains your clothes, apply the glycerine on the area and rub it gently, before washing it as usual. For an instant makeover, try a pink creamy blush to add rosy ness to your cheeks and lids and use plump shade on your lips and you are ready to flaunt your beauty.

A clear lip balm is the best thing for everyday use while sheer application of a colored lip gloss on lips, cheeks and eyes looks quite subtle and sexy. Glitter lipsticks and lip glosses are for special events and funky night parties that highlight your lips immensely. There are lip glosses that literally make your lips plumper and appear fuller and much more luscious. A very light film of pink or red lipstick gives you the look of that carefree beauty that every woman yearns for. Become an attention-grabbing vampiress, who is hot and trendy these days, by using a blood red lip liner to make precise lip lines and apply two coats of lipstick of same color, blotting the extra oil in between with the tissue paper.

Lipsticks contain waxes, oils, pigments and emollients that one must pay attention to for a quality product. Wax gives shape and ease of application to the lipstick and often natural beeswax, carnauba wax made from the leaves of Brazilian wax palm trees and candelilla wax processed from the plant of the same name found in Mexico is used for the purpose. Oils and fats such as castor oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, mineral oil, olive oil and petrolatum are used in the manufacture of lipsticks. However, castor oil is the most common ingredient as it forms a shiny film after drying that does not smudge easily. Many lipsticks also offer aloevera, amino acids, collagen, moisturizers, vitamin E and sunscreen to keep your lips soft, moist and protected from the weather conditions

For applying the color, stretch the lips and starting at the center of the lip and glide the color to the corners. Lip brushes help you to give better finish to coloring your lips and avoid the application of excess color. A quick way of applying lip color is to use the lipstick to stain the bottom lip, press them together to transfer some of the color to the upper lip and then use the angle tip of the sponge applicator to refine lip edges. For more natural looks, you can try tips given below:

  • The beautiful raspberry stain can be obtained by applying the berry color on the lips, blotting it with the tissue and then use brush to apply a second coat of the lipstick.

  • The nude bare lip looks can be obtained by using neutral pink lip color that matches your skin tone. Pale colored women can go for light orange color with a pinkish tint while olive skin can use brownish bronze shade. Avoid lip liners as you don't need the harsh lines. Add clear gloss to the center of your lip and you are ready.

  • There are lipsticks that add warmth and volume to your lips and are also have a flavor and perfume of their own. So buy the favorite fruity, candy or other flavors of your spouse for your honeymoon!

  • Older women should use creamier lipsticks.

  • Orange and brown shades make your teeth appear yellow so until you have that picture-perfect smile, keep them off your lips.

  • In summers, you may have those dreaded dry cracked lips. Simply use your toothbrush to get rid of the dead skin gently and apply lip balm generously on them to heal them soon.

  • Brown toned lips take on brown shades such as apricots, beiges, peaches and cappuccinos better than pink or blue toned lipsticks.

CHOOSING LIP GLOSS

Ladies with light and medium skin color should use pale natural shades of pencil for defining the lips and give them a better shape along with clear lip gloss with a sheer silver shimmer for a natural look. To make your lips appear soft and light pink, you can line them with pink lip pencil and use the pink-toned lip-gloss. The other shades that will suit them are light mauve, plum with a bit of sheer shimmer gold, pinkish red that may have the touch of sheer shimmer gold, red and red brown.

For some extra gloss, roll the wand applicator on the back of your hand until it collects in a tiny mound. Then scoop it up using the lip brush and spread it evenly on your lips. For feathering lips or lips having fine lines, gloss should only be used on the center of the lips. Too soft and creamy lip pencils get even more softened by the application of the lip gloss and may cause feathering. Targeting the application of lip gloss on the middle of the bottom lip makes thin lips appear bigger and fuller while to make too full tips look thinner, use deep matter lip colors only and avoid glossy finishes. For a daytime look that lasts all the day long, use a soft lip pencil to define the lips, use natural color lipstick, blot it with the tissue and avoid the gloss but in night, blend the pencil line with the lipstick using sponge applicator, to make lips appear fuller and get that spouty look and gloss them over.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

  • Lipstick staining your teeth makes you look extremely shabby. To avoid this, pucker your lips in an extreme 'O' and then apply the lipstick.

  • Even if your lipstick smudges to the insides of your lips, wrap your finger with a tissue and put it into your mouth, and twist it slowly to eliminate any extra color.

  • You can also highlight your lips by using a light film of eye shadow color coordinated with your lip color in the center of the upper and lower lips.

  • Don't let your lipstick pass on to the utensils while dining by using your tongue and lower teeth and avoiding them to come in contact with your lips.

  • To smoothen the lips a little before applying lip color, rub them a little with washcloth gently.

  • If your lips are naturally full and large, don't use the lip liner though you can soften the edge using a Q-tip and avoid glossy and shiny lip color.

  • If your upper lip is too thin or does not have a good shape, outline it with the lip liner similar to your lipstick and in the center portion, draw a second line giving it the precise shape using a brown pencil. Apply color including the brown line. This will make your lips look fuller.

  • To hide lip lines, apply lipstick vertically.
