The method of applying blush differs with the facial shape and the right application of blusher can make your face look longer or wider, as desired. Here are some tips to use while applying
blush:
- A little shimmer on the highest point of cheekbone near eyes
lends you an
instant sexy look.
- Accentuate the cheekbones by using a slightly darker shade there while
blending it down the cheek for a more natural look.
- Clean blush brushes are very important to avoid bacteria transfer in skin
and thus, one should clean them with non-soapy cleansers and baby wipes.
- Cream blush can be blotted off using a tissue while applying translucent
powder can dilute powder blush. Since gel & liquid blush
'stain' the cheeks, the only way to lighten them is it wash your
face, moisturize and reapply your makeup, this time more
sparingly.
- Cream blush can be used on lips for sheer and soft color and should be
applied using the fingertip.
- Dusky pink blush warms and freshens up the face, especially on the tendons
below the ears, but blush on chin may not look good, if your neck is lighter
than your face.
- Frosted blush may not be a good idea
after all and frost on lips or eyes
are more in fashion during night parties. Still, you can get that look by
applying a light colored frosted eye shadow
or lipstick such as gold, silver,
light pink, peach, champagne and beige on the top of the cheekbones. Frosted
highlighting powder is also available in the market to be used on any part of
your face.
- Gels and liquids are best to get rosy cheeks but since they stain the skin
be sure to wash your hands after applying them.
- Gels are dabbed as dot on apple of the cheek and two smaller dots on
cheekbone and rubbed in small circles to blend them well all the way from
cheeks to hairline.
- Make the face look wider, by looking straight into the mirror and applying
blusher on the cheekbone from under the center of the eye to the temple. Suck
in cheeks and use the darkest shade in the hollow making a 'C' shape up to the
temples but not higher than eyebrows. Use lighter shade on top of
cheekbones
and stop before the under eye area. You can add a little lush on tip of the
nose, forehead and chin.
- Never use blush on underside of cheekbones.
- Often the small blush brush that comes with the cosmetic is of no use. A
full round brush gives a professional look and make the overall look softer
and more desirable. It is important to have separate brushes for the blush and
the powder.
- Powder blush
should always be applied in one direction to avoid streaking.
- The best method to apply a blush is to take the blush on the brush and tap
off any extra color in the box itself. Alternately, if you are using gel or
cream blush, put a dab of it on your fingers.
- The best shades are warm, golden browns than cool, grayish browns,
especially when used as cheek contour.
- To find out the actual position of the apple of your cheek, look into the
mirror and smile and then sweep the brush upwards in an arc from your
cheekbone to your hairline. Color should be light and well blended.
- To make the face look longer, focus your blush on the outer area of the
face and near your hairline. Suck in cheeks and use the darkest color in the
hollow making a 'C' shape, no higher than eye on side of face. Use lighter
shade on top of the cheekbones and below your darkest blush shade to help slim
down the face. Apply lighter shade on apple of the cheeks and chin.
- Is Your Nose Too Long or Too Wide? Make-up
can make the
nose appear shorter and thinner. Apply a bronzing powder to the
tip of the nose for the illusion of being smaller, or apply on
the inner lower side of the nose to make the nose seem thinner.
Is Your Face or Neck Too Long or Too Wide? Using
blush and bronzer, you can contour your face and neck to appear
thinner. Apply your blush below the whole length of the
cheekbone. Apply bronzing powder on each side of your throat (in
line with the bend of the jaw bone) to extend the lines of your
neck.
- For anti
aging makeup
the best shades are pinks
and corals. Or a pinky coral. You'll know when you find the
right shade, your face will just 'light up'.
How Long To Store Makeup
"Cosmetic products are generally formulated and tested for a shelf life of 1-
3 years under normal storage conditions, depending on a product's composition,
packaging, preservation, and other factors. Consumers should be aware that
expiration dates are simply "rules of thumb," and that a product's safety may
expire long before the expiration date if the product has not been properly
stored. Cosmetics that have been improperly stored, for example exposed to high
temperatures or sunlight or opened and examined by consumers prior to final
sale, may deteriorate substantially before the expiration date. On the other
hand, products stored under ideal conditions may be acceptable long after the
expiration date has been reached."
So a good a rule of thumb of how long makeup can be stored:
- Lipstick: 1 year
- Eye Makeup : 3 months
- Blush: 6 months
- Nail Polish: 2 years if stored properly
Pick 'N Choose
Always opt for cosmetics brushes that are high quality to ensure that they're
effective and can withstand frequent washings.
Quick Tip
Introduce cosmetics one at a
time and test behind your ears or on your forearm if you have sensitive skin.
Hypoallergenic products are least likely to cause skin irritation.
* Put on your blusher towards the end of
your makeup. This way you can set back, look at your eye make up & then
decide where to place the blusher.
* For a fresh young look, smile & apply the blusher on the apples of your
cheeks, than stroke upward gently.
- Fair skin tone - use Pink or
Rose Light skin tone - use Nude pink, Coral, Tan
- Light to Medium skin tone - use
Pale rose, coral, tan
- Medium to Tan skin tone - use
Pink or Rose, coral
- Tan skin tone - use Tawny brown
RULE OF THUMB:-
Always apply the darker shade
of blusher on the lower area & the highlighter on the top portion of the cheek.
EGG SHAPED FACE:-
Apply blusher on the most developed area of the cheeks and towards the temple, mix it with the
foundation.
CIRCLE OR SQUARE:-
Apply blusher above the cheekbones, near the nose. Spread it towards the outer line of eyebrows.
LONG FACE:-
Apply the blusher above the cheekbones, spread the blusher towards the outer
edge of eyes.
BROAD FROM BASE:-Away from nose, apply blusher on the cheekbones, towards the direction of
temple, spread it like V shape. Apply blusher on the edges of jaw.
BROAD FROM ABOVE:-Apply
blusher on the cheekbones & with the jaw. Give touch to the whole
face also.
RED HAIR:- If you have red hair, then there are many shades of blush that you can
wear. And some of these will only look good on redheads, so why not make
the most of them?
Specifically brownish yellow orange red type shades are all good. Particularly
bronze shades will work well.
Other safe colors include the range of brown shades, and also most shades of
red too.
- First choose the color using nature as your guide. The
trick is to find a color that matches your cheeks when they're
flushed after exercise or being out in the cold. For a quick
test, 'spank' your cheeks & use the resulting color as a
guide. Another trick is to match your lip color. Fair skin
looks great in rose, olive in peach & dark skin in apricot
or even red.
- Now that you have the color, choose the right formula
for your skin type. Powder is typically best for oily &
combo skin. Cream is great for dry skin. Liquid and gel are
great for oily skin. For even better results, combine cream
& powder together. Keep in mind stains -- great for well-moisturized
skin, not dry skin -- tend to dry very fast so blend well &
fast.
- Apply foundation, eye color &
lipstick. While blush is
usually your 2nd-to-last makeup step (before powder), you should
experiment with what works best for you. Some makeup artists
like to apply blush BEFORE foundation for a more 'natural' look.
- Since you want a healthy flush, it's best to apply blush only
to apples of your cheeks. Keep color light & blended. If
you're using gel or cream, dab it on with your middle finger,
then blend with your ring & middle finger. The clean finger
will pick up any excess blush.
- If you've gone a bit too heavy on the powder blush, a bit of
translucent powder over it will calm it down. For cream blush,
blot the color off with a tissue.
- Finish your look with a sweep of translucent powder.
- Extra tip: For a sun-kissed sheen dab bronzer powder on
your forehead, chin & nose BEFORE you apply the blush. To
make sure it doesn't look like a stripe, use "a big brush
& a light hand" . Those with darker skin tones should
try a caramel-color bronzer (not orange) paired with a
yellow-based blush.
Top tip -
if you make a mistake and put too much blusher on, don’t panic!
You don’t need to start over. Instead, just moisten a sponge and
gently dab your cheeks with it. This will dilute the color and
return your overall look to something acceptable.
Note for oily skin: Excess oil
causes the skin to grab color causing your blush to darken as the
day goes on. Avoid this by powdering often, not with blush but with
pressed translucent powder.
Make sure to blend make up into your jawline and hairline so it
looks more natural. Also try using a brush instead of those square
sponge things or your face will look to cakey.
- How to apply blush for round faces - Give an illusion
of slenderness by applying blush in a sideways V on the
cheekbones. Blend it well and add a bit to the chin.
- How to apply blush for square faces - Soften the square
angles of the face with dab of blush on the forehead and chin.
Apply blush from the center of the eyes towards the cheekbones
and blend.
- How to apply blush for rectangular faces - Apply blush
below the outer corners of the eyes so as to reduce the
elongated square shape.
- How to apply blush for oval faces - Apply blush to the
prominent part of the cheekbone and blend towards the temples.
Blush Color makeup tips:
Choose blush to suit the occasion and the time of the day. What
goes well for a dramatic evening can be over the top for office
wear. For day wear, choose a lighter color than you would at
night. Opt for pink shades in winter while in summer opt for
peachy, warm hues. Soft natural pinks, beige and peach are ideal
for a bright day. Pinch for cheeks for a second or two and check
your blush color. A blush shade that mimics your natural
coloring will avoid an artificial and comical look. Keep your
blush color in the same palette as your lipstick shade. Check
out shades of blush in natural lighting. Discard old blush
shades from your makeup box. Combine shades to come up with new
ones - best suited for your skin tone.
